Legal
Content and image rights
Who owns what on this site. Some of it is ours, a lot of it is not, and one part of it is a photograph we do not have a licence for. All three are set out below.
1. What is ours
The Roomly name, the wordmark, the visual design, the layout, the written text on this site and the source code behind it belong to the operator of Roomly. They are not open source and they are not free to reuse.
You may read the site and use it the way it is meant to be used. You may quote a reasonable amount of this text with a link back. You may not copy the design, republish the pages, or reuse the code.
Notice what this section does not say. It does not say "all content on this site belongs to Roomly", because that would be false. A large part of what you see belongs to other people. Sections 3, 4 and 6 say who.
2. The software licence
The source code is proprietary. All rights reserved. The full licence text is in the LICENSE file at the root of the repository.
It is deliberately not MIT and not any other open source licence. An open source licence is a grant of rights to the world, and it cannot be withdrawn from copies already made. Publishing this repository under MIT would give anyone permission to run a competing copy of a flatmate matching service, including the moderation rules, the safety copy and the brand text, and there would be no way back. The project may open parts of this later. Choosing proprietary first keeps that a decision rather than an accident.
The licence covers our code only. It does not, and cannot, cover the third party code in section 6, which keeps its own licence.
3. What is yours
Your photographs, your bio, your prompt answers and your messages stay yours. Posting them on Roomly gives us a licence to display them to the people the site displays them to, and nothing more. It ends when you delete the content or your account.
We do not sell your photographs. We do not license them to anyone. We do not use them in advertising, and there is no advertising here to use them in. See section 13 of the Terms.
4. The rental photographs
The home page shows five rental listings in Vilnius. The photograph on each card is loaded directly from Aruodas.lt, from their image server, at the moment your browser draws the page.
What we do to keep the arrangement as fair as it can be:
- Nothing is copied. No Aruodas image is stored on our servers or in our repository. The file is fetched from their server and never leaves it.
- Every card links to the source. The link goes to the exact advertisement, so the arrangement sends Aruodas visitors rather than taking their traffic.
- We say whose they are. Here, on this page, and in the Terms.
- They come down on request. Section 5.
None of that makes it licensed. It is a mitigation, not a permission. The fix, if it is ever needed, is one field in one data file: swap the remote photo URL for a licensed image. The fallback path already exists, so the cards keep working.
Your browser also contacts Aruodas's server when you load the home page, so they can see your IP address. That is disclosed in section 6 of the Privacy Notice.
5. Takedown route
If you hold the rights to any image, text or other material on this site and you want it removed, we will remove it. There is no argument to have and no form to buy.
Named takedown contact
teisine@roomly.com, or the report form.
Tell us which item it is, ideally with the page address, and who you are. You do not have to prove ownership before we act. We would rather remove something wrongly and put it back than leave it up while we argue.
A person reads this address. We reply.
This applies to the rental photographs, to profile photographs someone uploaded without permission, and to anything else.
6. Fonts and libraries we use
The full list, with the licence text for each, is in THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.md in the repository. The short version:
| Component | Used for | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Fraunces | Headline typeface. Self hosted. | SIL Open Font License 1.1. Text in fonts/OFL.txt. |
| Inter | Body typeface. Self hosted. | SIL Open Font License 1.1. Text in fonts/OFL.txt. |
| Cropper.js 1.6.2 | Cropping a profile photo before upload. Served from our own server. | MIT. |
| Firebase JavaScript SDK 12.12.1 | Sign in and the database. Loaded from Google. | Apache License 2.0. |
| Cloudinary | Storing and serving profile photographs. A hosted service, not a library. | Used under Cloudinary's terms of service. |
Both typefaces are served from our own server rather than from Google Fonts. That is faster, and it keeps visitors' IP addresses away from Google's font CDN.
7. Our own imagery
The photographs used for the site itself, meaning the backgrounds, the illustration cards and the testimonial portraits, came with the project. Where they originally came from is not documented, and we could not establish it. They have been re-encoded, which is not the same as being re-licensed.
We hold no licence we can pass on for those photographs, so we grant you no rights in them. If you recognise one of these images as yours, section 5 applies and we will take it down.
The favicon was drawn for this project and is original work.
